Shetland library talk: Ethel Hofman: Mackerel at Midnight

hero
Join Ethel Hofman, author of “Mackerel at Midnight: Growing up Jewish on a Remote Scottish Island’ to hear some personal family stories of her Shetland childhood.
Ethel will be talking about growing up in the only Jewish family in Shetland: how she and her brothers were accepted, assimilated without giving up their Judaism and culture - and made lasting friendships.

Fleeing Russia a century ago, Ethel's father, Harry Greenwald, found a safe haven in Lerwick, Shetland. Soon, the shop he'd set up - 'Greenwald's' - became popular with the locals. Despite the hardships of living on a remote island, good food and good company were always available, and the recipes for the Jewish and island dishes prepared by Ethel's mother Jean are woven throughout the touching, affectionate narrative. As a unique blend of memoir and cookbook, "Mackerel at Midnight" shows how food can strengthen family and cultural bonds, and celebrates the tolerance and warmth of one Jewish family and the community that embraced them.
Ethel Hofman is now a widely syndicated Jewish American food and travel columnist, author and culinary consultant. She is a recognized authorityon international Jewish foods and culture, with special emphasis on Israel and the United Kingdom. SCoJeC is honoured to be presenting this free talk in partnership with Shetland Library - and we'll have some kosher food to share!
