Misatango

Born in Buenos Aires in 1965, Martin Palmeri's (right) output covers numerous choral works, instrumental works, and operas.  The Misa a Buenos Aires, often referred to as Misatango, is a setting of the mass in Latin containing the six standard movements Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei.  The music uses the style of the nuevo tango (a modern twist on the original form) and is scored for a mezzo-soprano soloist, mixed choir and an ensemble of bandoneon (a type of concertina), piano and strings. The world premiere was thirty years ago (1996) at the Avenida Theatre in Buenos Aires.  It has been performed and recorded internationally and is regarded as Palmeri's signature work.

Starting the programme will be Lamentaciones de Jeremias Propheta by Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983, left), written whilst residing temporarily in the USA, having been removed from his post as a teacher under Juan Peron's rule over Argentina.   Written in 1946, this work is sung a cappella and consists of three movements, also in Latin : O vos omnes, Ego vir videns and Recordare, Domine.

This is followed by the instrumental work Estaciones Portenas by Astor Piazzolla, arranged by Leonid Desyatnikov.
