What is safeTALK?

safeTALK is suicide prevention training that gives people the confidence and practical skills to recognise when someone may be thinking about suicide and help connect them with further support.

You don’t need to be a mental health professional to make a difference. Using a simple, practical approach, safeTALK helps people feel more comfortable noticing the signs, starting a conversation and knowing what to do next.

safeTALK is an internationally recognised programme, with thousands of people taking part across the world every year.

How does safeTALK work?

When someone is thinking about suicide, they may show signs through what they say or do that they need help. These signs can sometimes be difficult to recognise, particularly if we don’t know what to look for or feel unsure about how to respond.

safeTALK helps you recognise these signs, feel more confident talking openly about suicide and connect someone with further support that can help keep them safer.

The training is practical, supportive and designed to give you skills that you can use in everyday life – whether that’s with a colleague, friend, family member or someone in your community.

What will you get from attending safeTALK?

By the end of the training, you’ll feel better prepared to recognise when someone may be thinking about suicide, start a conversation and help them connect with appropriate support.

During the training, you will learn how to:

  • Notice and respond when someone may be thinking about suicide
  • Recognise signs and invitations for help that can easily be missed
  • Feel more confident talking openly and directly about suicide
  • Use the TALK steps: Tell, Ask, Listen and KeepSafe
  • Know where further support is available and help someone connect with it

You’re not expected to become an expert or have all the answers. safeTALK is about giving you the confidence to notice, ask, listen and help someone take the next step towards support.

Who are Advance Brighter Futures (ABF)?

Advance Brighter Futures is a local mental health and wellbeing charity based in Wrexham. Since 1992, we’ve been supporting people in our community through difficult times and helping them take positive steps towards better mental health and wellbeing.

We believe in seeing the person, not the problem. Everyone’s circumstances are different, so we take the time to listen to what matters to each person and support them to move forward in a way that feels right for them.

Our free support includes one-to-one Lifestyle Coaching, counselling for children and young people, wellbeing groups and activities, and self-advocacy workshops. We also work with businesses, organisations and communities to build confidence around mental health through internationally recognised Mental Health First Aid and suicide prevention training.

For more than 30 years, compassion, trust and genuine human connection have been at the heart of what we do. We believe people are the experts in themselves, and our role is to listen, encourage and support them to make positive changes in their lives.
