Dora Gordine was born in 1895 in Latvia and grew up in Estonia; she was a figurative and portraitist sculptor. Her early career was influenced by the “Young Estonian” group of artists who favoured Art Nouveau.
In 1938 she was hailed as one of the finest sculptors of her generation. She married her third husband, the Hon Richard Gilbert Hare, in 1936. Together they built Dorich House in Kingston Vale. The House was used as her studio, as a showcase for her work and the couple’s private apartment.
She died in 1991 and in 1994 the House was bought by Kingston University and turned into a Museum. But what was Dora Gordine really like? After meeting the eccentric architect for morning coffee every week for 3 years until her death, Tim Harrison shares his memories.
