About
Power. Success. Wealth. Excess.
Set in the vibrant, image-obsessed world of late-1980s Britain, a decade defined by Thatcherism, individualism, aspiration, and consumer culture, our adaptation of Carol Ann Duffy’s Everyman is a thrilling, funny, unsettling, and moving journey into a life and asks what remains when the glamour fades and the music stops.
On the surface, it is a world of opportunity, yet beneath the glamour lies a culture increasingly obsessed with status, achievement, and material success. Medieval audiences were warned against placing faith in earthly wealth and worldly pleasures; for a contemporary audience, the language may have changed, but the moral questions remain the same: What and Who do we place our faith in, and what happens when those things can no longer save us?
At the centre is Every, a representative figure, embodying a generation sold the dream of limitless self-improvement, ambition, and material success. Confronted by Death and forced to examine the life she has built. Everyman re-visits her past in a journey akin to Scrooge, faced with who she is and how she has lived her life.
Drawing on the atmosphere of the Hacienda nightclub, late-1980s dance culture, and a surreal landscape of memories, this production moves between reality and dream as Every journeys through the moments that have shaped her. As she moves closer to her death and reckoning with God, her world begins to glitch, overwhelmed by news reports of world catastrophes and tragedy. Faced with this unavoidable doom, it raises the question: Does life’s brevity mean we must live it to the absolute limit without care of the consequences?
At the heart of this ambitious adaptation are the ensemble, creating nightclubs, department stores, memories, and moments of psychological transformation through high energy choreography, music and song. Emotive storytelling combines with bold physical theatre creating a dynamic stage world inspired by the energy, hedonism, and spectacle of the decade.
Our incredibly talented student cast and creative team have worked incredibly hard to create a bold, visually striking, high energy, fun and thought-provoking piece of theatre. So please come and support them and take a step into a world both recognizable and unlike anything else you have seen!
