Workshop 7: Networking Without Overwhelm

Networking is often described as one of the most valuable parts of attending an event - but traditional networking environments don't work for everyone.

Busy drinks receptions, loud music, crowded rooms, unstructured conversations, pressure to introduce yourself, difficulty hearing or processing speech, and uncertainty about how or when to join a conversation can make networking exhausting or inaccessible for neurodivergent and sensory-sensitive attendees.

And when networking is difficult to access, people can miss out on far more than a conversation - they may miss professional connections, opportunities, knowledge and the sense of belonging that events are designed to create.

In this practical workshop, we'll explore how organisers can create networking experiences that offer choice rather than pressure, allowing people to connect in ways that work for them.

We'll look beyond the traditional drinks reception and consider different formats, environments and approaches that make meeting people easier, more predictable and less overwhelming.

During this workshop we'll explore:

✅ Why traditional networking environments can create barriers

✅ The sensory, social and cognitive demands of networking

✅ Understanding the impact of noise, crowds and competing conversations

✅ Why 'just go and introduce yourself' isn't easy for everyone

✅ Creating structured as well as unstructured networking opportunities

✅ Using conversation prompts, facilitated introductions and smaller groups

✅ Providing quieter ways and places to connect

✅ Building choice into networking formats

✅ The role of seating, movement, timing and breaks

✅ Digital and asynchronous ways to make connections

✅ Creating networking environments where opting out is genuinely okay

✅ Low-cost and no-cost changes that can make networking more inclusive

You'll leave with:

• A better understanding of why networking can be particularly demanding for some attendees

• Practical ideas for creating different ways to connect

• Strategies for reducing social, sensory and cognitive pressure

• Ideas for making networking more structured and predictable

• A framework for reviewing your existing networking activities

• Clear actions you can implement at your next event

This session is grounded in lived experience and real-world event delivery, recognising that successful networking shouldn't be measured by how many people we can fit into a busy room with a glass of something in their hand.

Connection doesn't have to look the same for everyone.

When we give people different ways to participate, we're not making networking less valuable - we're giving more people the opportunity to be part of it.
