Celebrating International Car-Free Day in Kendal with a weekend of inspiration to raise awareness about how to make journeys without a vehicle affordable and fun for everyone. Kendal’s new sustainability hub The Eddington will be the base start point for a number of adventures and activities.

Overnight Family Cycling Adventure

Saturday 20 September 2025
A SELF-GUIDED family-friendly cycle ride from The Eddington, along sections of the traffic-free towpath trail and low-traffic country lanes to a campsite in the beautiful Arnside and Silverdale national landscape. The ride is aimed at families, but all are welcome. Meeting at The Eddington for hot drinks, with maps to share ideas for routes, and meet people to ride with if you're alone. Bring camping gear and food for an overnight camp at a quiet campsite in Silverdale – CAMPING FEE TO BE PAID ON SITE (£6 adult, Under 12s £4 and Under 2s free). NB ONE BOOKING is for ONE family-size TENT Experts from the Cycle Touring Festival will be in touch in advance to provide advice on what to bring, and details of the campsite. This is NOT a led ride - You'll need to be fully responsible for yourself, and bring everything you need with you, including bike repair kit. Some of your route will be on roads so you'll need to be aware of the risks of traffic, especially if cycling with children.

Green Sketching Workshop

Sunday 21 September 2025
Join Green Sketch Ambassador Karen Bentley-Brown for a relaxing stroll, learn some nature doodling and drawing techniques and connect with nature. Participants will be given sketch books to take away plus pencils and other art materials to use on the day – the minimum donation of £5 will cover these costs and support the work of the amazing Future Fixers Community Interest Company (CIC).

Car Free Adventure Film afternoon and Walk Britain talk

An inspiring set of car-free adventure films kindly curated by Kendal Mountain Festival, and an overview of the amazing new Walk Britain book by author Elsie Downing. Elsie will recount first-hand experiences from her new book, which celebrates 90 inspirational car-free walks in England, Scotland and Wales. Brews and cakes will be on sale at the community café provided by the amazing team from Waste into Wellbeing for a donation. The small cost covers the hire of the venue and facilities, with all proceeds going to The Eddington Community Interest Company.

Dust off your old bike and bring it in for a bit of TLC. Stay a while and Join us for an inspiring evening of local action, cycling celebration and community connection - we're joining Walk and Wheel Kendal - a new group of passionate people who want to make Kendal a safer and more enjoyable place to walk, wheel and cycle. Kendal Cycling Network meeting hosted by The Bicycle Mayor

Calling Kendal cycling folk! Join us at The Eddington to hear about cycling opportunities and updates from a wide-range of organisations and representatives including the Kendal cycling festival team, plans to celebrate International Car Free Day. Karen Gee (Founder of Cycle Sprog and one of Kendal's local representative on the Bicycle Mayor of Cumbria committee) will also give an overview on different ways other communities are campaigning to get more children cycling safely to school. Hosted by The Bicycle Mayor of Cumbria, Richard Ingham, the evening aims to inspire action to make Kendal a better, safer place to cycle by providing a space to network and gather opinion on the need for a new campaign group. Tea, cake and networking opportunities!
