Your challenge. To find out what is so special about Dartmoor’s rainforests. Join our team of experts at Yarner Wood on a fun woodland adventure with three micro missions to learn more.
• Operation Bird Brain- find out more about the woodland birds and the long distance journeys many have taken. Listen to their songs and build your own birds nest
• Codename Minibeast- look at the world of Yarner wood in miniature. Find some of the minibeasts and tiny life using sweep nets and bug pots, microscopes and magnifiers
• Mission Wild Art-use the inspiration of the rainforest and its incredible wildlife; the sounds, the leaves, lichens and mosses to create your own artistic masterpiece
We’ll provide everything you need to complete your challenge led by our expert guides with id sheets and field equipment including sweep nets and binoculars
Everyone who completes all three missions will be awarded an Operation Rainforest Certificate. Let the challenge begin. We are running this as a morning or an afternoon session 9.30-12.30 or 1.30-4.30

We'll use nets and trays to look at what lives in the shallows. Dartmoor Youth Rangers and their families are invited to join us at our celebration event on Saturday 7th March 10:00am-2:00pm at Hope Wood, South Brent.
This event will celebrate the Dartmoor Youth Rangers programme, the young people involved, the support of their families, and the impact on people and place.
The event will be split into two parts – family tree planting in the morning and reflection and celebration in the afternoon. Parents, carers, and siblings will have the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a Dartmoor Youth Ranger! Hot chocolate and cake provided as usual!
DNPA leadership team and authority members will also be invited to see the impact the programme has on the young people and the landscape and celebrate with us.
Please "buy" a ticket for all family members who will be attending.

Join Jim the cabin boy and Dame Betty on a pantomime adventure around Yarner Wood as they try to find the Jewels of Renray and avoid Long John Silver and his hopeless pirates. We can't say much about the quality of the acting but we can guarantee you'll have a fun afternoon exploring the woods and helping the good guys save the day. This is a magical way for children of all ages to do something different and beat the seasonal blues. There'll be lots of audience participation, silly characters to meet and things to collect. You'll need to wrap up warm, put on your wellies or boots and come dressed for all weathers.
The event is free, but donations for parking are welcome. These can be made in cash or via the Ringo app on the day. All the details and arrangements will be emailed to you on booking. If you can't make it on the day please cancel your ticket as there is always a waiting list.

If you think you’ve got what it takes to become a Woodland Enchanter then enrol today and join us for a magical time in the woods.
Your lessons begin with Broom Building Basics, followed by Woodland Potions and finishing with Spellcasting and Stories.
This event is for 5-12 year olds and their families, older siblings very welcome.
There will be three activities each guided by a group leader. Build a witches broom from birch twigs to take home, then be lead on a short walk through the woods to collect natural ingredients for your potions. The event will end by creating a wild and wonderful story together to celebrate these magical woodlands. Parents will be involved throughout!
Come dressed for the weather (and in fancy dress if you can fit it over your waterproofs!)

Learn about the signs and clues to look for in search of some of our secretive mammals.
This family friendly activity will meet at Middle Trendlebere Car Park, East Dartmoor National Nature Reserve and involves a longer walk down the old Manaton Road to Hisley Bridge and Woods.
This will be suitable for more adventurous families and adults who want a longer walk and will be approximately 1hr-1 1/4 hrs. The path is rough and stoney, and muddy in places. There is a steep descent down to the bridge, returning the same way.

We'll take a first look at what they caught overnight in their moth traps at our Discovery Day basecamp. Go birdwatching with your ears open and your eyes closed
Join our local bird watchers on this easy morning stroll around part of East Dartmoor National Nature Reserve. Listen out for the songs of the spring migrants who’ve travelled thousands of miles to breed here, and learn some of the tricks and tips to tell them apart. Bring binoculars if you have them.

Opening the Moth Traps: Rainforest Discovery Day

Join Devon Moth Group for the start of our Rainforest Discovery Day.
We'll take a first look at what they caught overnight in their moth traps at our Discovery Day basecamp. Then using id books and the i-naturalist app we'll help them to identify the different moths and learn more about these fascinating insects. A wide variety of species of live moths will be shown that were caught at Yarner Wood the previous evening. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and admire the beauty of the moths
