Flood Warden Online Induction Training 2026
Between Wednesday 19 August 2026 and Wednesday 4 November 2026
Online training for Volunteer Community Flood Wardens delivered by the Environment Agency.
Please note this training is primarily for Flood Wardens based in Yorkshire, however people from other areas are the UK are very welcome to join.
This 2 hour training session will cover:
- Climate change and the 'bigger picture' of flooding
- The role of a community flood warden
- How to prepare for flooding
- Acting safely around flood water (note: this is not classed as 'water safety' training)
- What to expect when working with emergency responders

The rivers and us: Flood Defences Walking Tour
Between Thursday 20 August 2026 and Monday 24 August 2026
This event is part of the York rivers trail: the rivers and us.
As part of the York rivers trail, the Environment Agency are hosting two walking tours which will take a closer look at many of the defences in the city, implemented by the York Flood Alleviation Scheme following severe flooding in 2015. The walk will start at North Street gardens, where we will then walk to Scarborough bridge and across to the Museum Gardens. We will then walk through the city to the Foss Barrier, looking over the river at Clementhorpe and finishing the walk at King's Staith. Please ensure you are dressed appropriately for the weather and wearing comfortable footwear.

The York rivers trail: the rivers and us is a new trail along the River Ouse connecting people, place and flood resilience. Co-designed with communities, schools and artists, it uses art, storytelling and digital tools to reveal how upstream and downstream are connected - and how nature-based solutions are helping York adapt to a changing climate.

In light of the new funding rules and Component Three beginning on 1st July, this session, led by Luke Williams and Joe Allan, aims to increase staff confidence and familiarity with the tools available, namely the RATE. This should help significantly with the planning and allocation process and development of business cases.
The session will be largely practical, giving you the opportunity to try out the tool using a provided worked example. There will also be time to ask questions, and to talk through any examples from your own work.
Prior to attending, you will need to request access to the RATE tool by emailing FCRM_Investment@environment-agency.gov.uk

Working With Others (WWO) – is the EA’s approach to good engagement. Everyone can benefit from understanding the basics of the WWO approach to plan, do and evaluate internal and external engagement.
On Wednesday 3rd December between 10am and 12pm, this training session will provide you with an overview of the tools and techniques to help you identify who, when, why and how to carry out engagement of any size.
Whether you are new to the EA or have been ‘working with others’ for a number of years, this introductory training will help you to recognise the benefits of this approach, the importance of effective engagement planning and how it fits in with your role in the organisation.
The course, hosted on Microsoft Teams, will also show you how to find lots of guidance and more detailed training in the WWO SharePoint site, which you can access whenever you need.
A teams invite will be sent to you approximately a week before the event.

We will be tailoring the sessions around your individual concerns and queries by providing a form to submit topics of discussion ahead of the day.

We already do lots of things to support leaders in our organisation, from learning zone courses, coaching and mentoring, to a bespoke programme for aspiring team leaders, to name but a few. Yorkshire Area Leadership Team are keen to explore supporting a pathway to making “leading people in Yorkshire” a job that people in Yorkshire want to do.
To kick this off, we are running several friendly and informal sessions around our offices and depots to discuss what makes a great leader, what you are already doing and what the EA expects of its leaders, and how we can support future leaders.
