Sherborne Girls Speech and Drama Showcase

Friday 2 May 2025
Welcome to the annual Speech and Drama showcase evening! Pupils will be performing a selection of their Trinity pieces which they will then go on to perform for an examiner in a week’s time. Tonight is about showing you what we’ve been working on, but also about allowing and encouraging the girls to work under pressure; to control any nerves they might feel and to step out in front of you all to perform their pieces to the best of their abilities. Speech and Drama promotes this, but also calls for imagination, empathy, and teamwork; all valuable assets in today’s sometimes confusing world. We hope you enjoy the evening!

The Harriet Tory Trust Songwriting Concert with Keith Ayling

Friday 21 March 2025
The Harriet Tory Masterclass Trust was established in 2008 in memory of Sherborne Girls Old Girl Harriet Tory (Aylmar ’86), who was tragically killed in 2005. A memorial fund was set up in her name, which has been used to support the establishment and continuation of an annual masterclass/workshop and concert with and for the pupils at Sherborne Girls, which is attended by Harriet’s family and family friends. Given Harriet’s life-long love of music and the personal support she gave to many friends to help them pursue their musical passions, we believe this is a fitting tribute to her very full and selfless life.

The Cabinet of Dr Caligari

Thursday 10 October 2024
Made in the immediate aftermath of the First World War, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) is the quintessential German Expressionist film masterpiece. Robert Wiene’s distorted sets, sinister shadows and unnerving characters creating a paranoid, unreal world at a time of despair throughout Europe. At a local carnival in a small German town, hypnotist Dr. Caligari presents the somnambulist Cesare, who can purportedly predict the future of curious fairgoers. But at night, the doctor wakes Cesare from his sleep to enact his evil bidding… Incalculably influential, the film’s nightmarishly jagged sets, sinister atmospheric and psychological emphasis left an immediate impact in its wake (horror, film noir, and gothic cinema would all be shaped directly by it). But this diabolical tale nevertheless stands alone. Chris Green's new score is a haunting blend of electronic and acoustic instruments performed live by the composer.
