We are a loose group of Bal Folk music and dance enthusiasts putting on participatory French and Breton dance events in South Devon, UK, with live music from this beautiful folk tradition. We aim to offer dance workshops once a month and larger Bal Folk events with great bands, twice a year.

Bal Folk Dance Workshop #3

Sunday 18 January 2026
Join us to have fun while learning or improving your dancing skills in the traditional Bal Folk – French and Breton – dances. The Bal Folk tradition is a living one and creates a magical, community spirit. French dances are romantic, whirly and twirly and mostly in couples. Breton dances are earthy, trancey and stompy, and mainly in circles and spirals. The music is gorgeous. This workshop will get you familiar with the steps, a proper chance to dance, and confident to take part in any Bals. It's suitable for beginners and intermediate. Leading the workshop are Selena Mara and Josh Zatz. We've been into this tradition for nearly 30 years and love it ! We're experienced dance teachers. All welcome. Come as singles, couples, or groups. We’ll match you up with others when needed. We aim to teach a variety of French and Breton dances. We'll be more specific nearer the time. Tickets are £12 + fees. Grand Bal Folk with Dragonsfly TICKETS AVAILABLE ON DOOR

Join us for a gorgeous evening of Bal Folk - (literally meaning ‘Folk Ball’) - traditional French and Breton dancing, with live music by the fabulous Dragonsfly. They’re a Westcountry band known for their upbeat Celtic and world folk music, and will be playing for us their exhilarating French dance repertoire. It’ll be a super fun night of joyful music, dance and community togetherness with a wonderful variety of traditional couple and circle dances; such as the Bourree, Schottische, Mazurka, Waltz, Andro, Hanter-dro, Laride and more. Some are earthy, some romantic and some just fun! 7pm Doors Open 7.15 Dance Workshop - suitable for all levels 8.05 Dancing to Traditional Breton Singing From Josh and Selena 8.30 - 10.30 Dance the night away with Dragonsfly! Bal Folk Dance Workshop in Dartington

Come and learn - or brush up on - the traditional Bal Folk – French and Breton – dances. There’s an uplifting, joyful magic in being part of a Bal Folk, a true community spirit. The French dances are romantic, whirly and twirly and mostly in couples. The Breton dances are earthy, trancey and stompy, and mainly in circles and spirals. The music for both is very beautiful. This workshop will get you confident and nimble, to take part in our big Bal Folk in November in Totnes. And it'll be fun! Suitable for beginners and intermediate Workshop leaders Selena Mara and Sally Prag have been immersed in the Bal Folk tradition for nearly 30 years and are experienced dance teachers. You are welcome to come as singles, couples, or groups. We’ll match you up with others so you can dance ! We aim to teach: Schottische, Bourree, Waltz, Mazurka, Hanter Dro, En Dro, Laride, Rond de St. Vincent. Tickets are £12 + fees. Under 13's free. Teens £6. Hope to see you there!
