Based on the true life story of a young Richard Jenkins, whose ambition was to become an actor. Home life, however, was disruptive and dominated by his drunken, unsupportive father. His English teacher Phillip Burton, however, recognised the boy's raw talent and agreed to coach him. Due to Richard's chaotic family situation, Mr Burton offered to shelter him and, ultimately, adopted him.
