Discover Ancient Birkrigg

Saturday 25 April 2026
Join Morecambe Bay Partnership for a guided walk around Birkrigg Common discovering its extraordinary archaeological story. With stunning views and wide-open spaces, the pure peace of Birkrigg Common attracts thousands of people every year. It’s a wonderful place to walk the dog, ride a bike, or simply take in the fresh air and gather your thoughts. Birkrigg Common was probably just as important for past communities as it is today. This tour will explore the clues to how the land was used over the last 4000 years, both in life and in death that are scattered across the Common. There are no facilities on the Common and the tour will cross uneven ground. Please wear suitable footwear and bring any refreshments you may need. This is a fundraising event for the Charity, Morecambe Bay Partnership. Money raised will help fund vital projects supporting nature, heritage and our communities. Your ticket and your support is helping: NATURE which is under great threat COMMUNITIES facing poverty & inequality YOUNG PEOPLE to improve skills & life chances ACCESS FOR ALL to the Bay’s coast and countryside

Cockerham Sands Walk: a story of historic & coastal change

Saturday 30 May 2026
Discover Cockerham Sands on the River Lune estuary. Home to 12th century Cockersand Abbey and looking out to Plover Scar lighthouse, this area tells a story of rich history and coastal change. On a guided walk, explore the natural environment and history of Cockerham Sands with two of our team - our Archaeology and Heritage Officer, and our Engagement Officer for the project 'Our Future Coast'. Starting at Cockerham Sands you'll explore the area of land that once housed magnificent Cockersand Abbey and where the Chapter House remains. You'll walk further along the estuary to discover the important role played by the surrounding salt marshes of the River Lune estuary, the important birdlife it supports and how the Bay's coastline is changing. The guided walk will cover approximately 2.5 to 3 miles with stops to take in the Bay, estuary, and historic sites. You'll need a good level of fitness to navigate varied, uneven terrain, to stand for much of the event and we recommend boots with good grip and ankle support. We'll meet at Cockerham Sands. Where possible, please lift share as, at times, there can be strong demand for available parking. Please note - no dogs. The walking route is close to farms with cattle and will travel through important habitat for birds. For maximum protection and safety, dogs are not permitted at this event. We will meet in the area of LA2 0BB. Grid reference: SD 43114 53058 What Three Words Location: ///belief.rail.retiring

Across the Causeway – Exploring Sunderland Point

Sunday 5 July 2026
Join us for a very special walk across the tidal causeway from Overton across to Sunderland Point with an exploration of this tiny yet important peninsula of Morecambe Bay. Once we reach Sunderland Point, on foot, we'll explore the fascinating history, village, estuary, view points and sites on Sunderland Point. A fabulous place for birdlife as well as a rich and deep history, we'll aim to give you a thorough introduction to the Point. The causeway is covered twice a day by the tide so our walk is carefully timed to begin and end with safe passage along the exposed tidal road. Walking across the causeway to Sunderland Point offers a gentle pace of approach, views of wildlife and a sense of atmosphere. Route, distance and footwear: the route is approximately 6km so requires a reasonable level of fitness. The terrain is mixed with some uneven footpaths, shingle and cobbles along the coast and potentially slippy/muddy conditions along the causeway. We aim for a leisurely pace with time to pause and reflect and enjoy the peace, viewpoints, birds and sights. Meeting: we’ll meet in the car park opposite The Globe (pub/hotel), Overton. What3Words location: ///blackouts.contrived.bachelor https://w3w.co/blackouts.contrived.bachelor Toilets: there are no toilets at the start of the walk, but there are public toilets once we arrive at Sunderland Point. Please note we are not permitting dogs on the walk. This is to give maximum protection to wildlife and birdlife on the Point. Image credit: Sunderland Point community website
