Quakers in Kendal
About
George Fox's vision on Pendle Hill lit a blazing flame in Cumbria. Preaching outdoors to hundreds of people at Firbank near Sedbergh, and throughout the County under yew trees and in market squares, he spoke of an inner light, a direct relationship with God, pacifism, philanthropism, equality, honesty and simplicity.By the end of 18c, despite early persecution and restriction, about 1 in 10 people Kendal had become Quaker. They were responsible for the first Kendal banks which underpinned incredible economic growth. They were behind the growth of education and their charity work sustained the poor during periods of hardship and starvation during 18c and 19c. Their influence shaped our town.
