Baroque Collective Singers: A Lenten Meditation
The Baroque Collective Singers present a contemplative programme of Lenten motets and John Stainer's The Crucifixion.
The first half of the programme explores motets for Lent, Holy Week and Easter from across Europe – Lotti and Palestrina from Italy; Victoria from Spain; John the Fourth from Portugal and Rheinberger from Germany – and span the centuries from renaissance polyphony to nineteenth-century romanticism.
Stainer’s The Crucifixion (premiered in 1887) is a deeply moving Passion cantata whose lyrical choruses and heartfelt solos have inspired audiences for generations. The Crucifixion is described as a 'Meditation on the Sacred Passion of the Holy Redeemer', and tells the story of the final days of Jesus's life, including his Seven Last Words from the Cross.
Programme:
Victoria: O vos omnes
Lotti: Crucifixus
John the Fourth: Crux Fidelis
Palestrina: Ave Regina Coelorum
Rheinberger: Abendlied
Interval
Stainer: The Crucifixion
The Baroque Collective Singers
John Hancorn, conductor
Andrew Wicks, tenor
Andrew Robinson, baritone
Nicholas Houghton, organ
