Talk Series: The Scarborough Inheritance with Val Fermer

About
The Tale of the Scarborough Estate – Where there’s a Will, there’s a StoryThis is the story of the Scarborough estate in Ravenstonedale Parish. It is interesting because it included an inheritance from a woman in 1770 and was subsequently bequeathed to women in 1838.
It is also the story of a 1876 high court of justice case, nearly 50 years after the 1838 will was dated. It ends with the break-up of the Scarborough estate in 1879. It is a story in three chapters which come together to explain “The Ravenstonedale Inheritance of 1832 – Where there’s a Will there’s a Story”
About the speaker
Val Fermer began researching her family tree as a teenager, inspired by her grandfather. This was well before the internet, and consequently, she spent much time at the various record centres in London and wandering around churchyards looking for gravestones. When Val moved to Ravenstonedale in 2007, she became involved with the Ravenstonedale Parish History Group and began to apply her genealogical knowledge and interest to local history research projects, which evolved to become annual lectures which she gave to the History Group during the winter season of lectures. Val has also published two colour-illustrated books based on the talks she's given to the group.
