Talking Culture: Public Discussion Group
About
Free, booking required
Talking Culture is a series of friendly discussions where curious people can come together to think, talk, and explore today’s major issues.
Led by Dr Brittany Ralph (University of Liverpool), this session asks: what is happening with masculinity online?
Against a complex backdrop of social and economic pressures, masculine norms are often said to be shifting. From media debates around the ‘manosphere’ to UK policy discussions of a male loneliness epidemic, there is a growing sense that something is changing in how masculinity is understood online.
What sense can we make of this? Does online life reshape what it means to be a man? Are men’s friendships and emotional lives being altered by increased time spent online? And what might this mean for gender relationships more broadly?
In this open discussion, we’ll reflect together on masculinity online. No prior knowledge is needed.
Future discussions will include a range of topics exploring contemporary culture and society.
Please note: the building will be closed to the public from 5pm. Ring the doorbell on the right-hand side of the main entrance, and a member of staff will welcome you in.
