Alice in FUNderland
About
‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’ are two of the greatest, craziest children’s books. We are going to have fun and games with them – drop down some new rabbit holes, dig out the topsy-turvy, surreal ideas and jokes, and discover that quite a lot of the madness is basically science.* Lewis Carroll was ahead of his day!for instance:
Time: Sometimes time races by (when you're having fun); sometimes it drags by (in a supermarket queue?). For the White Queen it actually goes backwards... is this possible?
We'll share experiences we have all had with time. (Deja vu, anyone?)
Space: "This one is small, and those are far away" is one's first experience of 'size constancy'. Among other things Through our looking glass we'll find that the 'you' in the mirror is much smaller than the one outside. We will use this to shrink you into a box
(painlessly, promise!).
Stories: We'll play games to show how stories are built: the characters, the emotions, the drama;
Maybe even build one ourselves.
Nonsense words: Yes, you guessed right - English spelling is sometimes nonsensical! We'll check if there is a good reason for all the weirdness
... and we'll invent some new nonsense words, which sound like what they mean, like 'galumphing' or 'chortle' do
Games: Lewis Carroll invented many games. and we're collecting old ones, all the time. Since chess features prominently, and since it's a hard one, we'll lay out some simple games using just a few pieces
... and we'll show you some new games, using a pencil and paper only -
Six Impossible Things Before Breakfast: Science miracles that are on display every morning, if you know where to look
(clue- under your nose)
So there's Modelling and drawing, poetry and prose... and good memories, we hope.
(*Please note: quite a lot of the madness may be basically science, but basic science is NOT madness!)
