The Cotton Lords of Winckley Square
About
Friend of Winckley Square Tour Guide: This walk explores the lives of the wealthy industrialists who shaped Preston's cotton industry. The “Cotton Lords” were pillars of the local economy, providing investment, jobs, and civic patronage — but they were also criticised, especially by workers, for their power and wage practices during industrial unrest. Many cotton lords chose to build or live in grand homes on or near Winckley Square, reinforcing the square’s reputation as the centre of Preston’s high society.
