Stonyhurst Museum - Irish Evening
About
Stonyhurst’s Irish links are numerous, surprising and historically significant. An evening lecture on St Patrick’s Day, March 17th 2026, will examine some of these
startling stories.
The event provides an exclusive opportunity to view unique early Irish manuscripts, and vestments belonging to St Oliver Plunkett, Archbishop of Armagh, who was martyred in 1681. Many of the Irish Carroll family, who helped frame, and sign, the American Declaration of Independence and founded Georgetown University, were educated at the College. Plays and poems written by the Stonyhurst- educated Irish revolutionaries Thomas Francis Meagher and Joseph Mary Plunkett will also feature.
A highlight of the evening is a one-off chance to view three pieces of unique 17th and 18th century Irish silver, generously lent to Stonyhurst by the Poleberry Foundation. These rare Irish silver chalices illustrate the complicated story of Catholicism in Ireland. They will be displayed beside two rare Irish chalices from Stonyhurst, associated with the Irish Archbishop Malachi O’Queally, who was assassinated in Galway in 1645, and the 18th century Irish Bodkin family, linked to the Stonyhurst family of that name.
Starting at 7pm, the evening will commence with an illustrated lecture from the Curator and a private viewing of Irish artefacts in the Square Library. There will be a chance to explore the historic libraries and museum, before reassembling for some suitable Irish drink and refreshments.
