SOCIAL MEDIA, ADOLESCENCE & THE UNDER-16S DEBATE: LESSONS FROM AUSTRALIA

As the UK considers restrictions on social media for under-16s, Australia has already taken decisive action. In this timely session, clinical psychologist and researcher, Dr Danielle Einstein examines what Australia is doing, why the policy was designed as it was, and what the evidence tells us about young people’s mental health, attention, anxiety, and online behaviour.

Drawing on her direct involvement in shaping the Australian legislation, Dr Einstein explores the real-world pros and cons of a ban, how its impact will be measured, and how she responds to critics who argue restrictions go too far. She also considers where responsibility should sit along the spectrum of personal choice, parental guidance, school culture, and public policy and what families can realistically and confidently do to support healthy technology habits at home.

This session offers parents clear, evidence-based guidance on how to navigate childhood and adolescence in a digital world, whether or not legislation changes in the UK.

This seminar will be held in School. Access is via the Porters' Lodge on College Street, Winchester, SO23 9NA. Refreshments will be provided from 10.30am and the session will start at 11am.

BIOGRAPHY: DR DANIELLE EINSTEIN

Danielle is an Australian Clinical Psychologist and Researcher with 30 years’ experience. She helps schools navigate the intersection between anxiety and technology use. In 2025, she led policy change around the world, visiting the UN and educating leaders and human rights advocates in Australia, New Zealand, and ASEAN nations. In 2024, she earned thanks in Australian Parliament for 'living up to her name': she was invited as an expert at two State Government Social Media Summits, the National Age Assurance Expert Roundtable, and she was quoted in the pivotal Australian report that led to the social media minimum age. She provided critical evidence at the Australian Senate Inquiry and briefed the public on social media harms and the fundamentals of mental health support. Danielle is author of The Einstein Report and several books, including The Dip (2019) & Raising Anxiety: Why our good intentions are backfiring on children and how to fix it (2024, with Dr Judith Locke).
