ASIST suicide prevention

ASIST suicide prevention

About

ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) is a widely-used suicide prevention workshop that teaches practical intervention skills for supporting someone at risk of suicide.
The two-day workshop focuses on suicide intervention skills rather than just awareness. It’s delivered interactively with practical exercises, discussion, role-play and skills practice, all of which helps build confidence.
ASIST trains participants to recognise, ask about, and respond to suicide risk using practical skills and a structured intervention approach. This training aims to ensure participants are comfortable offering suicide first-aid support and can apply the skills in real life when needed.

By the end of the course, participants will typically be able to:
• Recognise signs of suicide risk — including direct and indirect invitations for help.
• Understand how attitudes to suicide (personal and societal) can affect intervention.
• Provide compassionate suicide first-aid guidance tailored to an individual’s safety needs.
• Assess risk and safety — explore current thoughts and identify crucial safety information.
• Develop a collaborative safety plan that supports immediate safety (“safe for now”).
• Seek a shared understanding of reasons for suicide thoughts and reasons for living.
• Link individuals to appropriate resources and further support (professional services, community networks).
• Practice self-care and life-promotion skills to support wellbeing for both the helper and the person at risk.

The training is suitable for:
-Anyone wishing to support someone at risk of suicide
-Front-line workers, mental health professionals, first responders
-Teachers, carers, community volunteers
-Friends or family members concerned about someone’s safety

The training is provided free by Lancashire County Council Public Health. Attendees have to pay a £50 deposit, which is returned immediately after full attendance of both days.

Cancellations are possible until 5th April.
