Smuggler's Lane bluebell walk
circular walk: aldcliffe & smuggler's lane
Exploring the interesting Smuggler's Lane from Aldcliffe, this circular walk will take in this ancient pathway down to the riverside cycle path, then back up towards the canal. A mixture of habitats along the walk means we will see a variety of plant, bird and insect species.
At this time of year the bluebells should be in full flower alongside red campion and great stitchwort. A great opportunity for some beautiful photos of our native plant species (and I'll also explore how to tell them apart from the Spanish and hybrid bluebells).
About Smuggler's Lane
Officially Accommodation Lane (but mostly known locally as Green Lane & Smuggler's Lane), this is an old trackway leading down towards the river Lune. As the name suggests, it was supposedly used to avoid the taxman for goods coming into the area! The deep sides of the bank suggests it has been in use for several hundred years. The main attraction now is the natural treasures it holds, with abundant hedgerow flora (including bluebells in spring), providing a habitat for many insects and birds as well.
