The Welkin
About
Rural Suffolk, 1759. As the country waits for Halley's Comet, Sally Poppy is sentenced to hang for the vile murder of a child. But when she claims to be pregnant, the law requires a jury of twelve matrons to decide whether she's telling the truth, or simply trying to escape the gallows.
Dragged from their domestic routines into the cold light of the courtroom, the women must navigate justice, morality and their own womanhood. There is a mob baying for blood outside, and a bloodthirst of a different kind amongst the twelve women.
A tribute to the timelessness of women’s resilience, Lucy Kirwood's The Welkin is a gripping and brutal play about bodies, belief and the roles we are made to play. Commentary on class, wealth, fertility and deception echo through the ages in this explosive courtroom drama, as twelve women wrestle with the fate of another.
