Talk Series: Bowness...old or ancient?

About
Bowness: a popular tourist resort, with boats of all shapes and sizes, Victorian terraces, villas and hotels, and a few older cottages, around the parish church. But how old is Bowness really? What were its beginnings? Why is it the only village in Lakeland actually by a lake? The talk will examine its relationship with the lake and the islands, its strategic position, and its connection to the ancient routes across the fells. John Campbell will use these factors to try to assess the origins of Bowness.About the speaker
John Campbell was born in Kendal and brought up in Bowness, where his family has lived for generations. After attending Bowness Boys’ School and Kelsick Grammar School, he studied geography at Edinburgh University, with a special interest in historical geography and cartography.
