Lancaster University Wellbeing Singing Sessions
About
Missing the joy of singing with others? Want a wellbeing boost? Need a relaxed creative break from work? Singing has many benefits for mental and physical wellbeing, including improved mood, reduced stress, and a greater sense of connection.Following the success of the Christmas Songs Workshop, experienced lead singer, songwriter and conductor Amanda Ross (RES), former Musical Director of local community choir The City Singers, will be running a series of informal lunchtime wellbeing singing sessions for Lancaster University staff and Co-working companies’ staff to sing popular songs from across the decades and genres.
Sessions will take place in LEC Training Rooms 1&2, primarily on the last Tuesday (some Thursdays) of the month over the next six months initially, with the aim of forming a new choir.
These are inclusive, neurodivergent-friendly singing sessions, with all abilities and those of all faiths and no faith welcome.
Come on your own or bring your colleagues and sing together.
Our Songs
We’ll sing a mix of popular songs that most people have heard of, arranged in a fresh way by Musical Director Amanda. These will include a feel good mix of pop anthems, rock classics, jazz standards, folk favourites and musical theatre gems, with songs made famous by ABBA, Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan, Kylie, Coldplay, U2, Guns N’ Roses, The Killers, T. Rex, The Vaccines and more.
Any member is also welcome to suggest songs that they would like to sing and Amanda will work out whether the songs fit the mix of voices in the group. If there’s a match, and we agree together on a song, she’ll create a special arrangement.
Do I have to be able to read music?
No! We’ll work from a booklet of lyrics sheets (shared in advance) that you can print, read on your digital devices, or borrow on the day. You don’t need to know how to read music or remember any words. If you do know or want to learn harmonies, you’ll be encouraged to sing them. We'll be singing a cappella (without instruments).
Do I have to stand up the whole session?
No. Seating is provided. Those who are able are welcome to stand and sing, but you can sit, move around, take a break, sway, dance, or clap along, whatever feels comfortable for you. The aim is to relax, have fun, and sing your heart out!
