Henry Seebohm: Ornithologist, Steelmaker and Traveller
About
Our speaker Paul Hobson is a professional wildlife photographer living in Sheffield, having previously been a teacher and lecturer. Paul explains: "Researching the life of Henry became an all consuming passion, starting shortly after completing my degree at Sheffield University, which eventually dominated 45 years of my life. Now that it is completed I divide my time between photography, riding my 1970's Kawasaki motorbikes and growing orchids."Henry Seebohm was arguably one of the most important personalities in the life of Victorian Sheffield. A keen ornithologist and steelmaker, he was instrumental in the setting up of many of the Sheffield naturalists groups. By the end of his life, his successful steel company had grown to become one of the larger works in the town and he was certainly the most famous British Ornithologist. Since his death in 1895, he sank into relative obscurity. Paul's recently published biography helps to illuminate his fantastic life and achievement.
