The King's Awards for Enterprise 2027

The King's Awards for Enterprise 2027

About

The King's Awards for Enterprise 2027 will shortly be open for applications. Enterprising Cumbria would like to invite businesses to find out about how they enter for 2027 and hear from previous winners about the impact of the Awards on their business.

If you receive an award you’ll be:
• invited to a Royal reception
• presented with the award at your company by one of The King’s representatives, a Lord-Lieutenant
• able to fly The King’s Awards flag at your main office, and use the emblem on your marketing materials
• given a Grant of Appointment and a commemorative crystal trophy.

We will be delighted to hear from two previous Cumbrian winners.

David and Helen Brass – The Lakes Free Range Egg Company

The Lakes Free Range Egg Company is a family‑owned business producing and packing free‑range and organic free‑range eggs from the heart of Cumbria. Since its establishment in 1997, the company has focused on a simple ethos: providing the best possible habitats for their hens.

Their approach includes tree‑planted pasture for range enrichment, biodiversity action plans, and close collaboration with producers to ensure consistent environmental and welfare standards. This sustainable, nature‑positive model has positioned them as industry leaders.

Awards include:

  • King’s Award for Enterprise – Sustainable Development (2025)
  • Queen’s Award for Enterprise – Sustainable Development (2018)

Daniel Holder – The Quiet Site

Daniel began his career as a jockey before retraining as an electrical engineer, working in London and Paris as a lithium battery specialist. He later founded his own battery business in former Yugoslavia, which closed during the Bosnian war. He then moved into hospitality, almost accidentally, eventually purchasing The Quiet Site in 2000.

For the past two decades, The Quiet Site has invested heavily in sustainable technology, including solar thermal, solar PV, biomass and ground‑source heat pumps, district heat mains, and self‑built, highly insulated glamping units. These efforts have enabled the business to trade close to carbon‑neutral since 2017.

In 2019, the team opened a Zero Waste Shop, marking a major step toward a circular economy. Daniel is also a founding member of SITU (Sustainable Integrated Transport Ullswater), which launched a new walking route between Penrith and Ullswater (2022) and initiated local hopper buses linking accommodation with attractions (2023). He is particularly interested in enabling the movement of people, not cars.

Daniel serves on both the HARPA Touring Parks Executive and the HARPA Energy & Sustainability Executive.

Awards include:

  • King’s Award for Enterprise – Sustainable Development (2024)
  • Queen’s Award for Enterprise – Sustainable Development (2020)
