Jewish Culture Month - Made in Edinburgh "DOUGH"
About
"Dough" by David Ian NevilleOnce the hub of the community, now like many of its older customers Albie’s family bake house is struggling to survive. As hungry re-developers sniff around, Albie bakes on determined not to give up.
The last shop in a row of derelict buildings, the bakery, has been hit by shifting demographics and the dominance of the big supermarkets. Now Rashida - on behalf of Albie’s landlord - wants to redevelop the whole site and turn the property business around, but is there room for Albie in her plans?
Set against the changing demographics of Jewish and Asian communities the play is a poignant tale of enterprising youth and resilient senior citizens.
David will be taking the role of Albie and will be joined by Gowan Calder in the role of his long-suffering wife, Isa. Adrian Harris, David’s co-compere at recent Festival Open Days, will be playing their infuriating friend Ivor whose weekly visits for challah turn into something more unsettling. Completing our cast is Iman Akhtar, a rising star from Glasgow, who will be playing the part of Rashida, the voice of a younger generation impatient for change.
DOUGH was first performed at A Play, A Pie and A Pint – Glasgow’s lunchtime theatre at Òran Mór in March 2008.
