Walk: The Lost Village of Chetwynd End
About
For the last two years, Newport History Society members have been actively researching the history of Chetwynd End. Today Chetwynd End is the name of a short length of street, but historically it was a settlement in its own right, and part of the parish of Chetwynd, not Newport. It stretched from Chetwynd House as far as Mason's Place on the Forton Road, Blue House on the Chetwynd Road, and Chetwynd Knoll on the Edgmond Road.Join Helen Mitchell, Chetwynd End resident and volunteer researcher, for a walk around the historic village of Chetwynd End, and learn about its fascinating history and the amazing cast of characters that have lived there over the centuries.
We’ll be focusing mainly on the period from 1780 to 1940, and learning about the development of the settlement over time and its relationship to the Chetwynd Estate, as well as the history of many of the interesting buildings and families who made this part of Newport into what it is today.
The walk is expected to last around 90 minutes - and although we won't be covering any difficult terrain, there will be a lot of standing required. The walk will start and end at Cosy Hall car park.
Numbers are limited to 20 due to safety considerations and the availability of headsets - so booking in advance is essential. The walk is being repeated twice to enable as many people to take part as possible.
