Cockerham Sands Walk: a story of historic & coastal change
Saturday 30 May 2026 2:00 PM - 4:30 PM (UTC+01)
About
Discover Cockerham Sands on the River Lune estuary. Home to 12th century Cockersand Abbey and looking out to Plover Scar lighthouse, this area tells a story of rich history and coastal change. On a guided walk, explore the natural environment and history of Cockerham Sands with two of our team - our Archaeology and Heritage Officer, and our Engagement Officer for the project 'Our Future Coast'.
Starting at Cockerham Sands you'll explore the area of land that once housed magnificent Cockersand Abbey and where the Chapter House remains. You'll walk further along the estuary to discover the important role played by the surrounding salt marshes of the River Lune estuary, the important birdlife it supports and how the Bay's coastline is changing.
The guided walk will cover approximately 2.5 to 3 miles with stops to take in the Bay, estuary, and historic sites. You'll need a good level of fitness to navigate varied, uneven terrain, to stand for much of the event and we recommend boots with good grip and ankle support.
We'll meet at Cockerham Sands. Where possible, please lift share as, at times, there can be strong demand for available parking.
Please note - no dogs. The walking route is close to farms with cattle and will travel through important habitat for birds. For maximum protection and safety, dogs are not permitted at this event.
We will meet in the area of LA2 0BB.
