John Etheridge is widely regarded as one of Britain’s finest contemporary guitarists, known for his extraordinary technique and versatility. His illustrious career spans collaborations with legendary artists including Soft Machine, Yehudi Menuhin, Andy Summers, Nigel Kennedy, Stephane Grappelli, John Williams, and Pat Metheny. He is currently touring the world with Soft Machine, bringing his unique artistry to international audiences.The John Etheridge Trio, featuring Ben Crosland on bass and Dave Tyas on drums, has been a staple of the Northern jazz scene since 1999. The trio’s annual tours across the UK, including London and major festivals, have become a celebrated fixture in the jazz calendar. Over the years, the group has performed with esteemed soloists such as Ben Castle, Dave O’Higgins, Martin Shaw, Theo Travis, Ed Jones, and Brandon Allen.
Their performances feature a captivating mix of jazz standards, bluesy and rock-infused material, and original compositions, with John Etheridge often delivering dazzling solo spots. Their 2006 album, Stitched Up, received high praise, including from Humphrey Lyttelton, who described Etheridge’s performance on Softly as in Morning Sunrise as “the apotheosis of the curtain wire.” Critics have called him “lyrical, dramatic, restrained yet over the top… allowing the music to take him where it will” (Kev Rowland, Jazz Music Archives), while Sting remarked, “I never wanted to be a star, just a highly respected musician like John Etheridge.”
