Who Is Your Client Outside the Arts?
About
Finding and Pitching to Non-Arts Clients and Buyers.Financially resilient artists have often done one thing differently: they found at least one strong income stream outside the arts sector: Schools. Businesses. Health settings. Community organisations. Corporate buyers. Collectors. The opportunities are real and specific to your practice. This session helps you find them, understand them, and reach them with a pitch that lands.
What this session does
We start with a distinction that shapes everything. Some artists sell what they do - workshops, residencies, performances, facilitation, commissions. Others sell what they make - paintings, ceramics, textiles, jewellery, prints. Many do both. The approach to finding clients and buyers outside the arts is different for each, and this session works for both.
Using a narrative framework, you'll build a detailed picture of your ideal client or buyer: who they are specifically, what they want, what's driving them, and why you are the right answer for them at this moment.
Then we add a layer that transforms how you pitch. Your client or buyer is somewhere on a journey from complete unawareness to ready to buy. Your pitch needs to meet them where they are. Understanding that changes everything about how you communicate your work to people outside the arts world. You leave with a pitch you can use the next day..
What you leave with
- A clear picture of 2 or 3 realistic non-arts client or buyer types for your specific practice.
- A one-page client and buyer map built in the session, yours to keep.
- A one-paragraph pitch written in your client or buyer's language, aimed at exactly where they are in their journey.
- One concrete next step to take within seven days.
Who this is for?
Artists, makers, performers and creatives at any stage of practice who want to grow income outside the arts funding system. Whether you're a visual artist, a crafter, a performer, a community artist or a maker, the session is designed to work across practices. You'll work with others in the room and find that the framework applies to all of you.
