🌿 The Challenge
This May marks the launch of something special — the first of nine new national river walks, beginning right here on the Mersey in Stockport.
The Mersey Valley Way will open up 21 kilometres of beautiful new paths, giving people across Stockport and Manchester the chance to explore nature, get outdoors, and reconnect with the river on their doorstep.
To celebrate, HMVCG is taking on its biggest challenge yet.
We’re aiming to break our 2025 record — when an incredible 7.5 tonnes of rubbish was cleared from the River Mersey and its banks in just one day.
This year, we want to go even further.
More volunteers. More impact. A cleaner, greener river.

💪 Be Prepared
We want you to be comfortable so you can focus on making a difference:
• Dress for the weather — layers and waterproofs are your best friend
• Wear sturdy footwear suitable for uneven and potentially muddy ground
• Bring water to stay hydrated
• Long sleeves and trousers are recommended (even in good weather)
• Choose lightweight, breathable clothing for all-day comfort

📍 Meeting Point & Timings
We’ll be kicking things off at Burnage Rugby Club – Club House:
• From 9:30am – Arrival & café open
• 10:15am – Orientation & safety briefing
• 10:30am – Big Clean-Up begins
Choose your session:
• 🌅 Morning: 10:30am – 12:45pm
• 🌤️ Afternoon: 1:15pm – 3:30pm
• 🌞 Full Day: Join us for the whole event!
You can sign up for any session that suits you — we just need numbers in advance so we can organise equipment and teams.

☕ Refreshments
The Burnage Rugby Club café will be open throughout the day, offering refreshments and facilities.
We’ll also be organising pre-lunch orders to make sure there’s plenty of food to keep everyone fuelled — details will be sent after you sign up.
