Introduction to Plant ID
About
A 3-session course, where you will learn the basic terminology of particular plant species and learn how to identify them in practice.Part 1: Leaves (May)
The solar-panels of a plant, the way in which they convert the sun's energy into a source of energy for the daily metabolic needs of the plant. We will explore key leaf structures and how these can help in identifying particular species.
Part 2: Flower (July)
Whilst we are most familiar with the showy flowers that attract insect pollinators, there are other reproductive structures that are much less obvious. We explore the purpose of flowers and common shapes and patterns and how these relate to groups of species (e.g. within a family).
Part 3: Fruits & Seeds (September)
The final part of the reproductive cycle before the next generation start their own generation, fruits & seeds are the ways in which a plant can 'move' whilst it remains static. We will look at the different mechanisms and vectors that plants use to distribute their progeny.
