Making Community Spaces Accessible

Making Community Spaces Accessible

About

“The issue with having a disability or an access need is having to constantly advocate for accessible spaces and events—and in the end, people just stay home.”

This feedback, shared after a recent event at the Gregson, stopped us in our tracks. What had gone wrong? What could we do better?

The Gregson is community-owned—it belongs to everyone in the city. But we know that right now, not everyone can access it in the same way.

We also know we’re not alone. Many community spaces want to be welcoming and inclusive—but what does a “safe space” really mean, and for who? We’ve begun to explore this more deeply: what safety, comfort, and accessibility look like for different people.

We know that 1 in 4 people are disabled, and that many disabled people feel public buildings are inaccessible to them. That means huge numbers of people are missing out—or choosing not to attend at all.

We want to change that at the Gregson. And we know others across our community want to do the same.

About the Event

This informal event is for organisations, creatives, and community groups who are committed to making their spaces more inclusive and accessible.

Join us as we share our developing accessibility plans and resources, and open up a conversation about what better access can look like across our district.
