Simon Callaghan & Raphael Wallfisch
About
Stroud Arts Festival 80th CelebrationCellist Raphael Wallfisch, widely regarded as one of the world’s leading cellists, and acclaimed pianist Simon Callaghan, bring together two masterworks of the cello repertoire, alongside a lesser -known 20th century piece, in an evening of richness, lyricism and virtuosity.
Beethoven’s Sonata in A major, Op. 69 remains one of the most celebrated works in the cello repertoire. Its warm opening, engaging dialogue between cello and piano, and spirited finale capture the composer at his most optimistic and inventive.
By contrast, Rachmaninoff’s Sonata in G minor, Op. 19 brings rich romantic character and expansive musical writing. From its darkly expressive opening to its sweeping melodies the sonata highlights the virtuosity and sensitivity of both performers.
Henriëtte Bosmans’ Three Impressions presents a set of atmospheric musical pieces, full of colour and nuance. Alternately reflective, lyrical and understated, these pieces reveal an intimate and finely balanced partnership between cello and piano.
This recital offers a compelling programme of contrast and connection, bringing together three distinctive pieces in a performance of warmth, depth and artistry.
