Simon Callaghan & Raphael Wallfisch
About
Stroud Arts Festival 80th CelebrationCellist Raphael Wallfisch, widely regarded as one of the world’s leading cellists, and acclaimed pianist Simon Callaghan, bring together two masterworks of the cello repertoire, alongside a lesser -known 20th century piece, in an evening of richness, lyricism and virtuosity.
Beethoven’s Sonata in A major, Op. 69, stands at the heart of the cello repertoire. Its radiant opening, conversational interplay between the instruments and buoyant finale make it one of the composer’s most uplifting chamber works.
In contrast, Rachmaninoff’s Sonata in G minor, Op. 19, offers sweeping romantic intensity. From its brooding opening to its expansive melodies and passionate climaxes, the work showcases the full expressive range of both cello and piano.
Henriëtte Bosmans’ Three Impressions offers a sequence of finely etched musical miniatures, rich in colour and atmosphere. By turns lyrical, introspective and quietly expressive, these pieces blend subtle harmonic language with intimate dialogue between cello and piano.
This recital promises an evening of elegance and emotional depth, performed by two outstanding artists at the height of their powers.
