Talk Series: Border Reivers: Romance and Reality

About
This talk explores the dramatic story of the Anglo-Scottish Border Reivers, whose activity was a defining part of life along the frontier during their sixteenth-century heyday. As well as uncovering the background to the reiving phenomenon, the presentation examines the realities of daily life in a turbulent borderland that was at one point among the most dangerous regions in Europe. It also considers the question of why and how reiving came to an end, and finally looks at the afterlife of the Border Reivers within cultural memory and the way in which they have come to serve as an iconic representation of border identity.About the speaker
