JAGS Parent Talk - Teen Risk-Taking
Tuesday 9 June (19:00 – 20:00 Online)
Zoe Shuttleworth is a Director of It Happens Education and leads and delivers the Substance strand of our work, talking about a range of different topics, from medicines and the law through to illegal drugs and harm reduction. Zoe also works directly with many of the leading UK festival organisers, sharing information about how to be safe at festivals with students, parents and teachers.
As young people navigate adolescence, they naturally encounter situations involving increased independence, risk‑taking and peer influence. Pupils regularly tell us that they value honest, factual conversations about these issues and want the adults around them to feel confident responding when questions or concerns arise at home. In response, we have arranged this session to support parents and caregivers in understanding and discussing risky behaviours in an informed, calm and practical way.
This session will include:
- An overview of why adolescents are more likely to engage in risk‑taking behaviours
- Up‑to‑date, evidence‑based information on substances, alcohol, vaping and other common risk areas
- A harm‑reduction approach focused on safety, communication and support rather than fear or judgement
- Practical guidance on how to talk with teenagers about risk, boundaries and decision‑making
- A live Q&A session following the talk
This event is delivered via Zoom and attendees will need the provided password to join.
This is to remind participants of a few key housekeeping points about the Zoom Webinar:
• The session will be for the parents of JAGS pupils only.
• That in participating, you are aware that the session may be recorded and made available to other parents and teachers in the school community who were unable to attend.
• There may be scope for questions and answers during the event. You will be responsible for managing confidentiality around any questions you bring.
