About

Join us for an engaging conversation on Community Wealth Building — an approach to creating fairer local economies through local ownership, good jobs, cooperative business models, ethical investment, and stronger communities.

This event will explore how communities can take greater control over the wealth they create, ensuring prosperity is shared more widely and sustainably.

Whether you’re involved in local government, business, community organising, or simply curious about building a fairer economy, this is a chance to hear ideas, share experiences, and be part of the conversation.

Together, we can rethink how wealth works — and who it works for.

Simon Grove-White, senior researcher at the Centre for Local Economies, will provide an opening presentation with Isabel Tucker, a local activist, talking about her work to promote local street markets.

Simon specialises in local economic development, inclusive growth, and place‑based strategy. His expertise spans local government, regional skills systems, community wealth building, and evidence‑driven policy design. He works closely with local authorities, combined authorities and anchor institutions to develop strategies that reshape local economies around social, environmental and community value. Before joining CLES, Simon worked in organisations focused on economic development, social policy and community‑led change including Oxford City Council. He is an experienced communicator, contributing written analysis, insight pieces and briefings to support national conversations about the future of local economies.

Isabel Tucker is a freelance copy-editor and activist with a special interest in the contribution street markets can make to local, sustainable economic development. She began to take a particular interest in Gloucester Green Market as the pandemic was coming to an end, and since then, she has become an advocate for this market, believing that it is not currently fulfilling its potential to support independent traders and local residents or to keep wealth circulating around the local economy. By submitting several Freedom of Information requests, she has gained a lot of information on this market, its operation and the Council's intentions for it. She founded the Friends of Gloucester Green Market in order to raise awareness of the market's potential and give residents a voice in how it is run.

Isabel admires the independent markets based in other parts of Oxford and would like to see Gloucester Green do better for residents in all income brackets seeking a variety of goods, including fresh food, both organic and non-organic.
