REBELS AND DREAMERS is not a conventional history walk.
As Walter Benjamin suggested, we will brush history against the grain. It is a journey through hidden Camden — through vanished buildings, forgotten rebellions, dangerous ideas, and people who refused to fit the world they were given.

Over the course of ninety minutes, we will move through streets that once echoed with factory workers, radical writers, political dreamers, outsiders, performers, and revolutionaries.

We begin outside Camden Road Station and trace the area’s hidden histories — from the giant power station that once dominated the skyline to the Idris factory, where women workers walked out in protest in 1911. Along the way, we encounter poets who transformed rebellion into art, educators who believed knowledge belonged to everyone, a radical theatre that challenged authority, and figures who crossed the boundaries of gender, politics, and social convention long before society was ready for them.

Expect stories that are political, moving, funny, unsettling, and unexpected. Expect hidden connections between the French Revolution, workers’ movements, bohemian culture, feminism, and Camden’s disappearing landscapes.

Rebels and Dreamers invites you to look beyond the surface of the modern city — and discover the people who dared to imagine another world.

The walk is led by Can Yildiz, an urban geographer, accredited Camden tour guide, and long-time Camden resident.

This event is organised to support Torriano Meeting House, which since the 1980s has been home to migrants, peace activists, Stonehenge campaigners, community groups, local politics, poets, artists, philosophers, scientists, and storytellers.
