Way Out Westport - KURVA TAK
About
KURVA TAKKurva tak is Polish for "fuck yes", and that's the entire thesis. Three musicians who've spent their careers operating at the highest level of their respective worlds, now stripping it all back to the rawest, most exhilarating thing they know: total improvisation. No net, no map, just three voices answering each other in real time.
The trio consists of trombonist Scott Flynn, a touring and recording collaborator with Pretty Lights and Odesza, with guitarist Sasha Brown and drummer Neal "Fro" Evans, founding drummer of the acclaimed jam band Dopapod. Flynn and Evans are longtime partners through their genre-bending project Elephant Wrecking Ball, while Brown brings a résumé spanning the Montreux Jazz Festival, New York's legendary 55 Bar (opening for Wayne Krantz), Andrew D'Angelo's DNA Orchestra, an eight-year run with Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds, and a co-creator credit on a New York Times–acclaimed theatrical production.
Both Flynn and Brown route their instruments through banks of effects pedals, transforming trombone and guitar into shape-shifting electronic voices, creating drones, textures, sudden walls of sound that get anchored by Evans' bold and imaginative drumming. The result is fearless, fully improvised music made by players with nothing left to prove and everything left to discover.
The name carries its own story: Brown's family traces Polish roots to their arrival in New York City, and kurva tak is the phrase that says it all. Pure, unfiltered yes. That's what the band chases every time they play. The sound of three masters saying fuck yes to the unknown, together, out loud.
No two performances will ever be the same. That's the point.
