We are delighted to welcome this year’s guest speaker, Edward Mayer, founder of Swift Conservation. Edward started working some 24 years ago to protect and restore the UK populations of this fast-declining, charismatic, dramatic, unique and enigmatic urban bird (our fastest bird in level flight, and we don’t even know if they really do sleep!) when he noticed that the local population of Swifts was starting to vanish.
That led him on an unexpected journey, from local to national then international advice-giver and evangelist for Swifts. From beginnings with just a few lonely souls helping Swifts across the Planet, to now, when the UK has some 150 local Swift groups, all helping this amazing bird that shares our homes. The effort quickly went worldwide, resulting with groups and individuals working to study and save Swifts all over Europe as well as in Iran, Israel, China, North and South America and Indonesia.
Edward will tell you all about Swifts, and how you can help them too, in a richly illustrated talk. You will be amazed, entertained, and inspired! Swift Conservation is a “not for profit” organization that is run by unpaid volunteers whose sole aim is to help Swifts.
