About
Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drugs recently published a new resource after conversations with family members called Substance Use and Neurodiversity.Families have told us that:
- They often feel passed from one service to another
- Services do not always understand the connection between neurodiversity and substance use
- Speaking with others who have similar experiences can reduce feelings of isolation
- Families have valuable knowledge and insight from their lived experience
About this event
We're inviting family members to join a small discussion session to discuss whether there is interest in creating an independent peer support group for families affected by substance use and neurodiversity.
This is not the launch of a new group. It is an opportunity to meet others, share experiences, and help us understand what support families would find most useful, helping shape future support for families.
This initial discussion is limited to 6 participants and is happening in person in Glasgow.
Who is this for?
This event is for anyone who supports someone else affected by both substance use and neurodiversity. This may include autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, Tourette syndrome, or other neurodivergent experiences.
Whether they have a diagnosis, is waiting for an assessment, or you simply recognise some of these experiences, you are welcome to attend.
What to expect
This will be a small, informal, and supportive discussion. You can take part as much or as little as you feel comfortable.
Together, we'll talk about:
- Whether there is a need for a dedicated family peer support group
- The challenges families face when neurodiversity and substance use overlap
- What support families find helpful
- What a future support group might look like
There is no pressure to speak. You are welcome to come along and simply listen. If you have any questions please contact Richard Watson who will be happy to chat with you before the event.
