From the Cumbrian chapman and his wares to the shepherds’ guides that have been produced by Lake District hill farmers since 1817, Cumbria has a rich and lively history of making, publishing and consuming the written word. In the 18th and 19th centuries there was a thriving industry of bookbinders, printers, newspaper publishers and booksellers in Cumbria, led by prominent figures such as John Ware in Whitehaven and John Soulby in Ulverston. This talk will shed light on a little-known aspect of Cumbrian heritage.Date
