Askham autumn foraging walk
About
Join foraging expert Abbi Lawson for an easy walk around Askham village to learn how to identify and forage for different wild foods, and what to do with them. We'll be focusing on the different autumn species most commonly found in hedgerows and along verges, and in woodlands and meadows. We'll have a couple of different drinks and nibbles to taste along the way made from foraged ingredients - and will finish in time for a pint at the pub afterward!Location:
Askham, near Penrith
Timings:
6pm start till approximately 8pm back at the pub
Accessibility:
This walk is suitable for all ages and experience levels. We will spend some time in the peaceful village of Askham itself, before heading through the picturesque churchyard, through a couple of fields and some woodland, and along a small country lane. The walk is mostly flat and fairly even underfoot, but not suitable for mobility scooters. The loop is about 1.5 miles - although we move very slowly, as we're constantly stopping to look at things!
What to bring:
Clothing suitable for the weather (layers, waterproofs, sturdy shoes) - we will go ahead in most weather unless it's absolutely awful!
A notebook and pen for taking notes
A camera or phone for pictures
Reusable cup or mug for tasting
Cash for the car park
Although this walk focuses on learning to identify species rather than spending lots of time picking them together, attendees are welcome to bring a basket or bag if you'd like to gather some wild food en route.
Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome.
Facilities:
Car park at Askham Community Centre which is by cash donation
There are two pubs in the village with toilets for customers
Please note that we/others may take pictures during the day to use in our publicity. If you do not wish to be included in any pictures, please let us know on the day.
