About

Learn to identify wild food growing right on your doorstep on this gentle guided walk around Stenkrith Park and the River Eden in Kirkby Stephen. We'll learn how to safely forage for and gather common autumnal plants (and possibly fungi), as well as how to process them and use them in the kitchen and medicinally, all in beautiful woodland and riverside fields. Afterwards, we'll gather together for a picnic I've prepared for you in advance using ingredients we've explored on the walk.

Location:
Stenkrith Bridge, Kirkby Stephen

Timings:
2.30pm start till approximately 5.30pm finish

Accessibility:
This walk is suitable for all ages and experience levels. We will be walking along an old railway line before heading through a couple of fields, then meandering back up through woodland to our picnic spot. The walk is mostly flat and fairly even underfoot, but due to some brief steep sections not suitable for mobility scooters. The loop is about 1.5 miles - although we move very slowly, as we're constantly stopping to look at things!

What to bring:
Clothing suitable for the weather (layers, waterproofs, sturdy shoes) - we will go ahead in most weather unless it's absolutely awful!
A notebook and pen for taking notes
A camera or phone for pictures
Reusable cup or mug for drinks

Although this walk focuses on learning to identify species rather than spending lots of time picking them together, attendees are welcome to bring a basket or bag if you'd like to gather some wild food en route.

Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome.

Facilities:
There is a small free car park near the bridge that fills up quickly. Additional parking can be found in Kirkby Stephen itself, and from there it's a short walk to our meeting point.
There are public toilets in Kirkby Stephen town centre.
Hand sanitiser will be provided before the picnic.

Please note that we/others may take pictures during the day to use in our publicity. If you do not wish to be included in any pictures, please let us know on the day.

Detailed information about our meeting point will be emailed to attendees ahead of time. If you require any further information about this event, please email abbi@hedgerowandhearth.org.uk.
