Kendal Castle autumn foraging walk
About
Join foraging expert Abbi Lawson for an easy walk around Kendal castle to learn how to identify and forage for different wild foods, and what to do with them. We'll be focusing on the different autumn species most commonly found in grassland and urban fringe environments, and in woodland terrain. We'll have a couple of different drinks and nibbles to taste along the way made from the foraged ingredients we'll meet on our walk!Location:
Kendal Castle
Timings:
3pm start till approximately 5pm
Accessibility:
This walk is suitable for all ages and experience levels. We will explore Castle Hill and the surrounding grasslands and woodlands in a gentle loop. Some parts of the hill are quite steep and unsuitable for mobility scooters, however we will be moving slowly and frequently stopping to look at things, and trying not to overexert ourselves!
What to bring:
Clothing suitable for the weather (layers, waterproofs, sturdy shoes) - we will go ahead in most weather unless it's absolutely awful!
A notebook and pen for taking notes
A camera or phone for pictures
Reusable cup or mug for tasting
Although this walk focuses on learning to identify species rather than spending lots of time picking them together, attendees are welcome to bring a basket or bag if you'd like to gather some wild food en route.
Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome.
Facilities:
There are multiple car parks in Kendal Town Centre. Nearby residential streets are limited to 2 hours parking for non-residents. Kendal is easily accessible by bus and train from Lancaster, Carlisle and the Lake District.
The town of Kendal runs a toilet courtesy scheme with businesses offering free toilets to the public. The nearest public toilets in walking distance are at Abbott Hall art gallery.
Please note that we/others may take pictures during the day to use in our publicity. If you do not wish to be included in any pictures, please let us know on the day.
Detailed information about our meeting point will be emailed to attendees ahead of time. If you require any further information about this event, please email abbi@hedgerowandhearth.org.uk.
