About

We are pleased to invite you to participate in a research study being conducted by researchers at Lancaster University and Ulster University, in collaboration with Global Link. As someone whose work has a direct or indirect connection to immigration, refugee integration, asylum seeking or refugee support, your perspectives would be valuable to our research.

On Thursday 3 September 2026, we will host Escape to Safety, an immersive multimedia installation at the Student Commons Lecture Theatre, Lancaster University. Participants will experience a 15-minute simulation in which they walk in the shoes of refugees from Eritrea, Iran and Sudan, moving through eight stations depicting different stages and challenges experienced while seeking asylum in Britain. The experience has been designed to encourage reflection and discussion about the challenges refugees may encounter while seeking protection in the UK.

The event is being held in conjunction with Art Beats Festival 2026, a collaborative international arts festival bringing together Lancaster University and Sunway University, Malaysia. Attendees will also have the opportunity to visit the Art Beats exhibition in Lancaster University Library, explore other creative work presented as part of the Festival, engage in informal conversations with members of the research team and enjoy light refreshments.

The installation will be open between 5.00pm and 7.00pm.

Participation is entirely voluntary. We are particularly interested in hearing the views of professionals, practitioners, decision-makers and community stakeholders, whose insights may help us better understand how immersive experiences can support dialogue, learning and engagement around refugee integration and asylum-related issues.

Full details about the research study and participation arrangements are provided in the Participant Information Sheet. Down here: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/ssmw4ylfgluv5m1qlat1b/Participant-Information-Sheet.pdf?rlkey=cdyn6r5aviwa9x3n7s02dt35t&dl=0
