This talk explores the little known yet significant Sheffield furniture industry; its size, craftsmanship, services and organisation and how it won over local and later national markets by offering styles to suit increasingly demanding and sophisticated markets.Our speaker Julie Banham spent 18 years as an antiques dealer and furniture restorer during which time she was an Associate Lecturer with the Open University. After ten years at Sheffield University, she worked with the Diocese of Sheffield, parishes and heritage bodies supporting churches through the process of maintaining and developing their buildings for wider use. She is a trustee of a number of local charities and a volunteer at Wentworth Woodhouse.
Background: From the mid-nineteenth century the growing number of rail networks created new markets for a broad range of domestic and commercial goods. However, the furniture market was slow to adapt so that, with few exceptions, the furnishing of homes, hotels, offices and inns was determined by the skills and flair of local manufacturers
